So this album is not as consistently strong as The Lead, where every song was a banger. BUT I saw them at Brooklyn... Paramount for the tour of this album, and my god it was one of the most flames shows I've ever seen. They were so so good and they could actually sing and dance all this stuff live. Minimal props, not gimmicks no tricks, just raw talent, hard bops, and killer dance moves.
Something I don't like about the album is the weird like, subtly anti-woman pro-man vibes? Walk Like This is basically saying "my guy fucks me so good I walk funny." Like, don't play into the guy's ego right? At least not in public.
And Get It Till I'm Gone is also just like, flaunting that this poor girl isn't gonna get any till I'm done with him? Why push that in this girl's face? Why not sing about how you have this guy hooked around your pinky instead? I feel like all the songs in The Lead were about not giving a damn about guys and putting them in their place, but this one feels more pick-me-girl.
I still listen to this on repeat tho. show more
These gals about to POP OFF.
This album is pure excellence. And if you watch their live videos, you know they're the real deal.... And then you see them live. And then you realize they're REALLY the real deal.

Mary Black was an artist I picked up from my parents as a kid. They had a couple of CDs and we would... listen to them + others in their collection whenever we drove into the city. Such beautiful music. show more
During covid, one of my roommates thought he caught it so we all had to disperse. I went to stay in my gf... at the time's folks' apartment in the upper west side near the Lincoln Center. I stayed there alone for 2 weeks around September 2020.
The apartment was on like the 50th floor, pretty high up there. It was on a corner and the living room had big glass windows on 2 sides of the building. One day it was raining all day, but then in the evening it cleared up but the clouds were still low and very dramatic. They were moving around and the sunset was peaking through the gaps, shining orange light all over me and the cityscape around me. I felt like I was in an airplane looking out, flying through the clouds but really they were moving past me. It was one of the most memorable experiences, and this album soundtracked it for me. show more
Still some of the best dance music I've heard
I remember reading the Pitchfork review of this and it said "forgiveness is not a feeling usually associated with rock music" and I... thought that was so cool. show more
