Illinois is my all time favorite album for a myriad of personal reasons, but damn if this isn't a perfect example of how... great of a songwriter and musician Sufjan is. Lyrically gutting with lush-but-also-simple arrangements, it's a tough but rewarding one to revisit. Very excited to hear the 14-minute version of Fourth of July when the reissue hits. show more

this album is like being enveloped in a warm, thick cloud. it's familiar and painful and intimate and full of grief. it feels... like we're holding each other. we're all gonna die. show more

Love Sufjan. This is another mellow masterpiece. There aren't many songwriters in the world that can do something this perfect with a guitar,... a couple of vocal tracks, and the odd synth overdub. It seems very well produced, even though I know some of the parts were recorded on an iPhone in hotel rooms. We're in an incredible period of history that this is possible and commonplace. It feels so intimate, and maybe how it was recorded is part of why. show more
