Sometimes all we need is just something funny, horny and youngish with good lyrics and this is definitely what sabrina did. this is... the most POP album I've listened in years (together w 1989) and it isn't, as much of 2024 albuns, a deep and complex album but, at the same time, it's a brilliant writted and produced and mixed production. show more
Honestly, I've felt disappointed by a lot of the mainstream releases that have come out this year. Dua Lipa's album sounded bland, Beyoncé... watered down her sound, and Ariana Grande's album was good but ultimately left no impact. And when I initially heard of Sabrina Carpenter's new album, especially with knowing how massive the three singles on the album got, I was expected to be in for a very bland experience.
Oh how wrong I was. "Short n' Sweet" definitely is both a short and sweet experience, as almost every song hits in some way or another. And even on the songs that aren't as good, they still have some element that is just so memorable that it gets stuck in your head. Like on "Please Please Please" where Sabrina does a key change for the second verse of the song, but then switches back to the regular key for the rest of the song. It bugged me a bit, but that line on the hook where she says "I beg you don't embarrass me motherfucker" is just so good.
While most of the album fluctuates between a disco, poptry, and trop vibe, I believe the stronger moments are the disco-centric moments. Songs like "Bed Chem" and "Espresso" were two of my absolute favorite songs on the record, and I think they might end up being some of my favorite songs of the year. I feel like if most other pop artists tried singing lyrics like "Come ride on me, I mean camaraderie" it wouldn't come off as sexy as when Sabrina sings it. Or even lyrics like "Say you can't sleep baby I know, that's that me espresso". There's something about the lower register of her voice that reminds me of early Lana Del Rey but if Lana was way more pop.
While not my favorite album of the year, I feel that "Short n' Sweet" will be an album that I will absolutely remember in the coming years. And if you haven't already heard the album, I think you should at least hear the singles if not the whole album. show more
