The power mentioned in the title is the strength of love in a few different forms and the power of coming out victorious... from the trials of life and the people who push you to your extremes. While “PRINCESS OF POWER” is not as strong of an album lyrically as it’s predecessor (“Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land”), this album more than makes up for that with enjoyable vocals and an engaging sonic landscape. Including video game sounds and combing classical strings with more electronic sounds works, especially on album standout “CUNTISSIMO.” There are annoying moments such as portions of “BUTTERFLY” and “I <3 YOU,” but the highs of songs like “METALLIC STALLION” and the emotional hard hitters of “EVERYONE KNOWS I’M SAD” and “ADULT GIRL make the album stronger and more interesting.
If the song has sad lyrics, I do enjoy when artists make the song have a more upbeat production so that it isn’t overwhelmingly depressing. On “EVERYONE KNOWS I’M SAD,” Marina sings “Maybe I'm not built for this kind of connection / Maybe I was born to live my life alone / I can't even look in my own reflection / Don't wanna admit that I've lost all hope” and the even harder pair of lyrics with “Sometimes the truth is, I wanna leave everything behind / Maybe if I disappear, then the black hole will clear.” On “ADULT GIRL,” Marina sings of how because of her upbringing and scars from that time of her life that she is stuck somewhere between a girl and adult; hence feeling like an adult girl. The lyrics that hit home from this track come from the bridge: “Someone tell me how to heal the terror livin' inside me / I don't even know what's real, I just know I wanna be free.”
