There are two ways to tango: you are either team Pichuco or team Piazzolla. My grandfather always claimed Piazzolla killed tango. For him, tango was for dancing, and Troilo was king. He gifted me his old record player along with a stack of vinyl, and this album was in the collection. This one is special on vinyl. Grela's guitar in particular has its own distinct space; it's not just a flattened background harmony that gets lost in digital versions. Grela and Troilo are both at the very front of the song. It’s sad that this was changed for the digital version. As I was studying guitar at the time, this one caught my ear right away and became my entry point to tango. The way Grela's guitar and Troilo's bandoneon play and talk to each other is the real magic here. It's an intimate, melancholic conversation between two masters of another time.
