I first heard Fake Empire around this time of year so as soon as I hear that piano it feels like Christmas for... me. This is The National’s best moment - it still carries some raw punk energy in songs like Squalor Victoria and Mistaken For Strangers … but the hints of their ballady arena era start to come through.
