ZachFayer: In Waves by Jamie xx

When the singles were first being released, my initial impression was that Jamie was releasing a future funk album about a decade too late. The singles “Baddy on the Floor” and “Life” sound similar to music that artists like Yung Bae and Macross 82-99 were releasing all throughout the 2010s. However, I’ve come to appreciate that this album takes a lot of that 80’s-era sampling and turns it up a notch. The album also has incredible flow — I’m more tempted to stream this album in full, rather than just a song here and there. Standouts for me are “Waited All Night” and “Falling Together”.
